All things Vestibular Physiotherapy
-
What is Vestibular Physiotherapy?
Vestibular Physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy focused on conditions affecting the vestibular system — the system that helps your brain maintain balance, spatial awareness and stability during movement.
Vestibular rehabilitation uses specific assessment and treatment techniques to help reduce symptoms, improve balance and build confidence with movement.
-
What can Vestibular Physiotherapy help with?
Our physiotherapists can assess and support people experiencing:
Vertigo
BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo)
Dizziness or light-headed sensations
Vestibular neuritis
Labyrinthitis
Balance difficulties
Unsteadiness when walking
Motion or movement sensitivity
Reduced confidence following episodes of dizziness
Falls or fear of falling
Ongoing symptoms following some vestibular conditions
-
What does a Vestibular Physiotherapy assessment involve?
Your physiotherapist will take the time to understand your symptoms, medical history and how dizziness or balance difficulties are affecting your everyday life.
Depending on your presentation, assessment may include:
Balance and walking assessment
Eye and head movement assessment
Positional testing for BPPV where appropriate
Functional mobility
Strength and coordination
Falls risk
Movement and symptom triggers
Your physiotherapist will then develop an individualised treatment plan based on your assessment.

How can Vestibular Physiotherapy help?
Treatment will depend on the cause of your symptoms and may include:
Repositioning manoeuvres
Specific techniques may be used to treat BPPV when indicated.
Vestibular rehabilitation exercises
Targeted exercises can help your brain adapt to changes in information coming from the vestibular system.
Gaze stabilisation
Exercises may help improve your ability to maintain visual focus while moving your head.
Balance retraining
Progressive balance exercises can help improve stability and confidence.
Habituation and movement rehabilitation
Gradual exposure to movements that provoke symptoms may help reduce movement sensitivity over time.
Strength and functional rehabilitation
We can also address strength, walking and functional difficulties that may have developed alongside your vestibular symptoms.
In-Home Vestibular Physiotherapy
For someone experiencing significant dizziness or balance difficulties, travelling to a clinic isn't always easy.
That's why we offer mobile Vestibular Physiotherapy across Adelaide, allowing assessment and treatment to take place in the comfort of your own home.
Home-based assessment can also allow your physiotherapist to consider how your symptoms affect everyday activities and mobility within your own environment.
When should I seek medical attention?
Not all dizziness is caused by the vestibular system.
New or sudden severe dizziness — particularly when accompanied by symptoms such as weakness, facial drooping, difficulty speaking, severe headache, chest pain, fainting or other new neurological symptoms — requires urgent medical assessment.
If you're unsure whether physiotherapy is appropriate, our team can help determine whether further medical assessment may be recommended.
