Feeling Dizzy? How Vestibular Physiotherapy Can Help
Dizziness can present in many different ways. You might feel like the room is spinning, feel unsteady when walking, become dizzy when rolling over in bed, or simply feel like your balance isn't quite right.
For many people experiencing dizziness, vertigo or balance difficulties, Vestibular Physiotherapy may be able to help.
What is Vestibular Physiotherapy?
Vestibular Physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy focused on assessing and treating conditions affecting your balance and vestibular system.
The vestibular system is located within the inner ear and works closely with your eyes and brain to help maintain balance and stability during movement.
Problems within this system can contribute to:
Vertigo and dizziness
BPPV
Balance difficulties
Motion sensitivity
Unsteadiness when walking
Falls or fear of falling
Reduced confidence with movement
What is BPPV?
BPPV (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo) is a common cause of vertigo.
It often causes short episodes of spinning when changing the position of your head, such as rolling over in bed, looking upwards or bending down.
A physiotherapist trained in vestibular rehabilitation can perform specific tests for BPPV and, when appropriate, use repositioning manoeuvres to help manage the condition.
How can Vestibular Physiotherapy help?
Your physiotherapist will first assess your symptoms to understand what may be contributing to your dizziness or balance difficulties.
Depending on your presentation, treatment may include:
Repositioning manoeuvres for BPPV
Gaze-stabilisation exercises
Balance retraining
Habituation exercises
Strength and walking rehabilitation
Education and an individualised home exercise program
Because dizziness can have many different causes, your physiotherapist will also identify when further medical assessment may be appropriate.
